Growing Together in God

PE at Parochial

'Parochial Cares', our mission is to prepare children for the future by living, learning and growing together in God.
To live life... life in all its fullness (John 10:10)

Vision:

At Parochial, we aim to provide all children with a high-quality physical education curriculum that develops competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and inspires all pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness and promotes healthy, active lifestyles. We provide children with opportunities to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other activities to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Implementation:

At Parochial we are:

Educating for Wisdom, knowledge and skills in Physical Education through the development of a clear progression in skills and knowledge which builds upon strong foundations. Physical Education begins in the Early Years, as children develop basic fundamental movement including, overall body-strength, balance, co-ordination and agility, as well as developing confidence, competence, precision and accuracy when engaging in activities that involve fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, passing, batting and aiming through a regular use of the outdoor area and lessons.

In Key Stage 1, children will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills by mastering skills such as throwing and catching, as well as becoming  increasingly competent and confident with basic movements including running, jumping and hopping. Children will access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They will engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities and team games in a range of increasingly challenging situations to develop simple tactics for attacking and defending. Additionally, children will explore a wide range of dance styles and perform dances by linking simple movement patterns together.

In Key Stage 2, children will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement in a variety of sports. Children will access a broad range of opportunities to refine and develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. They will continue to engage in competitive sports and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending. They will develop and understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success by comparing their performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best.  Children will continue to explore a wide range of dance styles and perform dances using a range of movement patterns. Children will learn a range of dance techniques and terminology to create routines and show-stopping performances.

During Key Stage 2, children will also be introduced to swimming and water safety. Children will learn a range of strokes including front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and use one or more of these competently, confidently and proficiently to swim over a distance of at least 25 metres. Children will perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Educating for hope and aspiration through Physical Education by learning about career paths that rely on Physical Education skills and knowledge. During Enterprise week, children learn about possible careers such as personal training and teaching in sport through representatives in our community and Active Tameside coaches. Throughout the Key Stages, children have several opportunities to participate in organised competitive sport in the community and within the academy. We provided all children and parents with regular information for local grassroots sports clubs and target talented individuals whom have the potential to excel in specific sports.

Educating for community and living well together by utilising their knowledge and skills when competing against other schools in Tameside in a wide range of sports. Parochial offers both children and parents a range of opportunities to improve their lifestyles such as cooking lessons provided by Active Tameside and taster sessions run by local companies to encourage participation in the local community. Our children enjoy demonstrating their skills during our annual sports day where relatives are invited to support their child and celebrate their individual and house team successes.

Educating for dignity and respect by being fully inclusive. At Parochial, we believe that every child is entitled to be included within physical education and school sport. Our inclusive curriculum teaches children how to be respectful of one another and to participate in physical activity and sport with dignity through effective teaching of sportsmanship. Our children learn how to strive and succeed and how to cope with success and disappointment through supporting one another.

Impact:

Our comprehensive Physical Education curriculum equips our children with the knowledge to lead healthy and active lifestyles and the skills to compete in sports at a competitive level. Our children leave us ready for the secondary curriculum with a wide experience of sports and physical activity and the ability to participate showing dignity and respect for others. They have the skills and knowledge to participate in a range of sports and are ready to further develop and refine their techniques and tactics.
