English
This half term, Year 6 pupils will be learning about narrative poetry, using the sea as their main focus. Children will read and perform poems, explore how poets use language to describe feelings and images, and build their vocabulary. They will finish the unit by writing their own poem about a journey across the sea, using personification to bring their ideas to life.
This half term, Year 6 pupils will be working on non-fiction writing through a unit based on Charles Darwin and his journey to the Galápagos Islands. Children will learn how to write newspaper-style reports, using features such as headlines, subheadings and quotes. They will then write their own journalistic report sharing what they have learned about Darwin’s discoveries.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will begin by building confidence with percentages, including finding percentages of amounts and making links between fractions, decimals and percentages. Children will use practical examples and problem-solving activities to help them apply these skills in different contexts. Later in the half term, learning moves on to geometry, where pupils will work with coordinates in all four quadrants and explore how shapes can be moved on a grid using translations and reflections.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will be learning about electricity. Children will identify and use circuit symbols, draw and build simple circuits, and explore how different components work together. Through practical investigations, they will test how voltage, switches and the number of bulbs affect a circuit, including changes in brightness and volume. Pupils will plan and carry out fair tests, make predictions and explain what they have found using scientific vocabulary.

History
This half term, Year 6 pupils will be learning about life in Britain during the Second World War, with a focus on the Home Front. Children will explore how Britain stood firm against the German threat, including the Blitz, rationing, evacuation and the important roles played by ordinary people. They will look at how people tried to carry on with everyday life during the war and what VE Day was really like for different communities. Pupils will also develop their historical thinking by exploring bias, propaganda and censorship, helping them understand why it can be difficult to know exactly what life was really like at the time.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will be working on a structures project, designing and building a model playground. Children will explore how structures are made strong and stable, investigate different materials and joints, and test their ideas through practical making. They will finish the unit by designing, building and evaluating their own playground structure, thinking carefully about safety, strength and purpose.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will be learning about why the resurrection of Jesus is so important to Christians. Children will explore the Easter story through the Gospel accounts and look at why Christians believe Jesus rose again. They will learn how Christians mark Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and discuss how beliefs about resurrection bring hope, forgiveness and comfort, including when someone dies. Pupils will also think carefully about how these beliefs can influence the way Christians live their lives today.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will be creating their own text-based adventure games. Children will plan a story with different choices, build their game using coding tools, and test how it works. They will also practise reading code, fixing errors and improving their games by adding new ideas, helping them develop problem-solving skills and confidence with coding.

This half term, Year 6 pupils will be learning about citizenship. Children will explore what it means to be an active and responsible citizen, including understanding democracy, laws and how decisions are made locally and nationally. They will discuss rights and responsibilities, learn how people can have a voice in society, and think about ways they can contribute positively to their community.
