RE at Parochial
'Parochial Cares', our mission is to prepare children for the future by living, learning and growing together in God.
To live life... life in all its fullness- (John 10:10)
Vision:
At Parochial CE Primary School, we follow the Manchester Diocese RE Agreed Syllabus supported by RE Today resources which means that RE makes a positive contribution to our pupils’ learning. Knowledge and skills developed by RE contribute to pupils’ readiness to participate in life in modern, diverse Britain and in a plural world. Good RE is never coercive: this area of learning is not about making pupils into believers but seeks to help them become literate and articulate about religions and beliefs, and to be thoughtful members of a plural society, so that in learning about religions and worldviews they are able to make informed choices about how they want to live their lives whilst also understanding more about the faith of other people they meet. As such, it is relevant to every pupil and every citizen of our region.
Parents and carers can choose to withdraw their child from all or part of RE teaching and learning. In this case, we would ask parents and carers to contact the school and discuss their request.

Educating for Dignity and Respect through RE
Educating for Dignity and Respect through RE
Religious Education at Parochial promotes dignity and respect for all. Children learn about the importance of fairness, justice, and equality through stories, sacred texts, and key concepts like forgiveness, compassion, and community. They reflect on what these ideas mean in their own lives and how they can treat others with kindness and empathy.

Educating for Hope and Aspiration through RE
Through RE, children are encouraged to explore big questions about purpose, meaning, and belonging. They learn that people of faith often seek to make the world a better place and are encouraged to think about how their own beliefs and actions can contribute to a fairer, kinder society.

Educating for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills through RE
Religious Education is taught weekly in every year group following the NATRE scheme, which is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and understanding year on year.

In EYFS, children explore themes such as special times, special people, and special places. They learn about key Christian festivals like Christmas and Easter, explore stories from different faiths, and begin to understand how people celebrate what is important to them.
-
In Key Stage 1, children begin systematic study of world faiths. They learn about Christianity and Judaism, and are introduced to Islam through key concepts such as God, belonging, and community. They explore how stories, symbols, and places of worship are important in different religions.
-
In Key Stage 2, children deepen their understanding by exploring key beliefs, teachings, and practices in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism. They reflect on how faith is expressed in festivals, rituals, prayer, and family life. They also explore thematic units, such as Why do some people believe in God and some not?, How and why do people mark significant life events?, and What matters most to Christians and Humanists?
Children have opportunities to visit local places of worship, including St Michael’s Church, St Gabriel’s Church, and Albion United Reformed Church, helping them see faith in action within the local community.

Educating for Community and Living Well Together through RE
Educating for Community and Living Well Together through RE
At Parochial, we value the importance of learning from people of different backgrounds. Our curriculum helps children understand the beliefs and practices of others, building respect, empathy, and an appreciation of diversity. We nurture a school community where children listen well, ask thoughtful questions, and express their own views with kindness.
Our close links with St Michael’s Church, St Gabriel’s Church, and local charities like Willow Wood Hospice provide children with opportunities to see how faith communities support others.
Impact:
By the time children leave Parochial, they will have developed:
-
A strong understanding of key religious concepts, stories, and practices from a range of faiths and worldviews
-
The ability to think critically, ask deep questions, and reflect on their own beliefs
-
Respect for others, even when they hold different views
-
The confidence to discuss big ideas thoughtfully and listen well to others
-
A readiness to continue exploring beliefs and values at secondary school and beyond
Through RE, our children grow into reflective, compassionate, and informed citizens who are equipped to make a positive contribution to a diverse and ever-changing world.
Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)
Parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child, either fully or partly, from Religious Education (RE) lessons in accordance with the Department for Education guidance and the Education Act 1996.
If you wish to withdraw your child from all or part of RE, please contact the school office to discuss your request.
We ask parents to speak with the Headteacher before making a decision so that we can explain the nature and content of the RE curriculum and answer any questions you may have.
Requests for withdrawal should be made in writing to the Headteacher.
