English
This half term, Year 6 pupils focus on poetry, exploring free verse through the theme of secrets and hidden places, inspired by texts such as The Secret Garden. Children read, discuss and perform poems, developing their understanding of how poets use language to create mood and meaning. They build a rich vocabulary and experiment with descriptive techniques before writing and performing their own free verse poem about discovering a secret garden.
This half term, Year 6 pupils develop their narrative writing skills through the classic story The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. Children explore characters, themes and setting before planning and writing their own version of the story, choosing different viewpoints and writing styles. A strong focus is placed on using rich vocabulary, formal language and dialogue to create atmosphere and develop characters, helping pupils write confidently and thoughtfully in the style of a classic tale.

Maths
Maths
This half term, Year 6 pupils build confidence working with fractions, focusing on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions, as well as dividing fractions by whole numbers. Children use practical resources, diagrams and visual models to develop a secure understanding of how fraction calculations work, before applying their knowledge to problem solving. By the end of the unit, pupils are able to use efficient methods to solve a range of fraction problems and explain their mathematical thinking clearly.

Science
This half term, Year 6 pupils learn about the human circulatory system and how it keeps our bodies healthy. Children explore the role of the heart, blood and blood vessels, investigate how oxygen, nutrients and water are transported around the body, and learn how exercise affects heart rate. They also examine how lifestyle choices, including diet, smoking, drugs and alcohol, can impact the heart and lungs, developing both scientific understanding and awareness of healthy living.

History
This half term, Year 6 pupils study World War II, beginning with the reasons Britain went to war in 1939. Children learn about evacuation and why it was necessary, before debating whether it was the right decision for families at the time. They also research the key Allied and Axis powers, exploring the roles played by important world leaders and countries during the war. Throughout the unit, pupils develop their historical understanding by asking questions, debating different viewpoints and using evidence to support their ideas.

Art
This half term, Year 6 pupils explore drawing as a way to express ideas, opinions and personal identity. Inspired by Maya art, street art and artists such as Diego Rivera and Picasso, children experiment with mark making, symbolism and tonal drawing techniques such as chiaroscuro. They develop their own powerful images by choosing symbols, patterns and styles that communicate a clear message, learning how artists use visual impact to make their voices heard.

RE
This half term, Year 6 pupils explore what Christians believe about Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Children study parables such as the Great Banquet and the Unforgiving Servant to understand key Christian ideas about forgiveness, generosity and inclusion. They also learn how Christian beliefs are put into action today by exploring the work of charities such as Christian Aid, helping pupils consider how faith can influence choices, behaviour and efforts to make the world a fairer place.

This half term, Year 6 pupils develop their coding skills by designing and creating increasingly complex programs using Purple Mash. Children learn how to plan and debug games, use variables, timers and scores, and organise their code using functions and flowcharts. They also explore user input and create their own interactive projects, including text-based adventure games, helping them build confidence in problem solving, logical thinking and computational skills.

Spanish
This half term in Spanish, children will learn how to describe a town and give directions. They will practise using prepositions, adjectives and comparative language, as well as asking and answering questions, developing confident and accurate spoken and written Spanish in real-life contexts.

PE
Children learn to:
- Dribble confidently with both hands and strong coordination.
- Select passes appropriately to the game situation.
- Shoot consistently at varied angles and distances, performing lay‑ups correctly.
- Combine skills with fluency and control, adapting to play.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of rules, footwork and pivoting.
- Play in full‑sided games and help to officiate matches.

PSHE
PSHE
This half term, Year 6 pupils learn about safety, growing up and how their bodies and emotions change. Children explore topics such as making safe choices about alcohol, using social media responsibly and recognising trustworthy online information, as well as the physical and emotional changes of puberty. The unit also includes age-appropriate lessons on conception, pregnancy and birth, and basic first aid skills such as how to respond to choking, helping pupils understand how to keep themselves and others safe and healthy.

Music
In the spring term, children build confidence performing in ensembles and explore musical structures such as canon, ostinato and layered textures. They compose and improvise using a range of rhythms, refine performances using musical vocabulary, and analyse music from different genres and historical periods. Children also use recording technology to review and improve their work.
