English
In English this half term we will be looking at the poem 'Night Sounds' by Berlie Doherty
Through this atmospheric poem, pupils will learn how poets use descriptive language to create mood and help the reader imagine a scene. We will focus on identifying powerful vocabulary, discussing how sounds and imagery build a sense of mystery, and practising reading aloud with expression. The children will also have opportunities to create their own short poems inspired by night time settings, using expanded noun phrases, similes and carefully chosen verbs. This unit supports the development of reading comprehension, vocabulary enrichment and creative writing skills in an engaging and imaginative way.
We will then move onto our text 'Major Glad, Major Dizzy' by Jan Oke
This charming and humorous story helps the children explore themes of friendship, differences and problem-solving. Through our work on Major Glad, Major Dizzy, children will develop their reading comprehension skills by making predictions, discussing characters’ feelings and explaining key events in the story. In writing, the children will practise using expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and past tense verbs to retell parts of the story and create their own character descriptions. We will also focus on improving sentence structure, punctuation and spelling, while encouraging the children to express their ideas clearly and confidently.
