Welcome to our class page!
In Year 1, we’ll be building on the wonderful learning from Reception and taking our next steps together. We’ll explore new topics, ask lots of questions, and develop our confidence as we grow.

Maths
Maths
This term, the key focus is number.
Children will learn to:
-
Count forwards and backwards to 50.
-
Count objects carefully and accurately.
-
Notice number patterns (20, 21, 22… 30, 31, 32…).
-
Count in 10s and 1s instead of just counting in ones.
-
Use resources like ten frames, cubes and counters to help them count.
-
Break numbers into tens and ones (e.g. 34 = 3 tens and 4 ones).
-
Find one more and one less than numbers up to 50.
By the end of the unit, children will be more confident working with numbers to 50
Children will also begin counting in steps (multiples) of 2 and 5. We will support them to develop confidence, accuracy and flexibility with numbers and develop the crucial skills for all future mathematical learning.

English
This term, the children will begin with a poetry unit 'At the Zoo' by William Makepeace Thackeray. They will enjoy learning and performing the poem whilst also discussing the words and their meanings. The children will then use their imagination and knowledge of list formats to invent their own original list poems using descriptive words and rhyming
.
Following this, the children will explore the engaging non-fiction text 'The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth' by Ellie Hattie and Karl James Mountford. Through this story they will develop their descriptive writing skills and learn to write using sequencing, some punctuation, clauses and imagination. As the unit progresses, the children will write their own stories about a missing animal .

PSHE
PSHE
This half term in PSHE the children learn about rules, responsibilities and belonging.
Pupils who are secure will be able to:

Explain why class and school rules are important.

Talk about the different needs of pets.
-
Describe some of the needs of babies and young children.
-
Recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others.
-
Identify groups they belong to (such as family, class, clubs or teams).
-
Understand that different people belong to different groups.
-
Explain why voting is a fair way to make decisions when lots of people are involved.
By the end of the unit, children will better understand fairness, responsibility and how they belong to their school and wider community.

RE
RE
This half term in RE,
In this unit, children learn about parables and why they are important to Christians. They discover that Christians believe Jesus told parables to teach people about God.
Pupils will learn about:
-
The Parable of the Lost Son and what it teaches many Christians about God being loving and forgiving.
-
What it means for Christians to say sorry to God and believe they will be forgiven and welcomed back into God’s family.

The story of Jonah and the Big Fish.
-
How many Christians show their beliefs through worship.
By the end of the unit, children will understand that stories from the Bible help Christians learn about God and guide the way they live their lives

This half term in science,
In this unit, children explore the wonderful world of plants.
They will learn to:
-
Identify and name common wild and garden plants.
-
Recognise and name basic parts of a plant, including roots, stem, leaves and flowers.
-
Observe plants closely and describe what they see.
-
Understand what plants need to grow and stay healthy (water, light and suitable temperature).
-
Notice how plants change and grow over time.
Children will take part in practical activities such as planting seeds and observing how they grow.
By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to name parts of a plant and explain what plants need to survive

PE
This term children develop their basic gymnastics skills in a safe and supportive environment.
They will learn to:

Move confidently in different ways (rolling, jumping, balancing and travelling).
-
Create and hold simple shapes such as tuck, star and straight.
-
Balance on different body parts and on low apparatus.
-
Link movements together to create short sequences.
-
Work safely and take turns when using equipment.
By the end of the unit, children will be more confident in their coordination, balance and control, and will be able to perform simple gymnastics sequences independently.

Dance
This term, the children will be developing their dance skills by learning to copy and repeat simple movements with increasing control and coordination. They will explore changes in speed, size, and direction working with a partner to short movement sequences, and perform simple movements to music. The children will also begin reflecting on their performances by talking about what they did and how they moved.

Music
This term in Music, children will be learning to keep a steady pulse and explore rhythms using their voices, instruments, and bodies. They’ll listen to music from different styles and cultures, and begin to describe sounds using musical vocabulary. Through songs, games and simple compositions, they’ll learn the difference between pulse and rhythm, and explore long and short sounds. Children will also experiment with pitch, volume, and tempo, and use symbols to help them perform and create music. Singing simple songs, copying rhythms, and joining in with class soundscapes will help them grow in musical confidence.

Computing
This term in computing, the series of lessons will provide an opportunity for the children to develop the skills to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content through the creation of their own animated story book. Having developed the necessary skills to use 2Create a Story, the children could then use and apply these skills using information technology to support writing activities.

Spanish
This half term, children will learn vocabulary for food and drink and begin expressing simple opinions such as “I like” and “I don’t like.” They will practise greetings, numbers and key conversational questions, building confidence through songs, games and role-play. Children will take part in simple supermarket and café role-play activities to apply their learning in a real-life context.

Design Technology
This half term children will be learning all about fruit and vegetables!
By the end of the unit, children will be able to:

🍓 Talk about different fruits and vegetables and understand what makes something a fruit.

🌱 Know where fruits and vegetables grow, such as on trees, plants, bushes, or underground.

🥕 Describe what fruits and vegetables are like, including their colour, texture, and taste.

🍌 Prepare fruit and vegetables safely and use them to make a delicious smoothie.
The unit gives children hands-on experience with food preparation while helping them learn about healthy eating in a fun and practical way.
