Meet Marge, Pat and Dorothy – Our Peckingham Palace Hens
We are delighted to introduce three very special new residents at Parochial – Marge, Pat and Dorothy, our ex-battery hens! They now live in our brand-new chicken run, fondly nicknamed Peckingham Palace.
Why Chickens?
This project supports our eco-conscious children in understanding:
-
Where food comes from and how it is produced
-
The importance of sustainability and reducing waste
-
How to care for living things with kindness and responsibility
-
The farming process and the many roles involved in getting food from farm to fork
Any eggs laid by our hens will be donated to the Parochial Pantry food bank or used in food technology lessons.
Life at Peckingham Palace
Our hens live in a large, fox-proof coop, built by our caretaker, Mr Ryan. The space is big enough for children to go inside and help with their care.
Looking after Marge, Pat and Dorothy is an important responsibility held by our Year 6 prefects, who proudly take on the role of Chicken Monitors. With staff support, they help with:
-
Feeding and giving fresh water
-
Collecting eggs
-
Cleaning the coop
-
Checking on the hens’ welfare
Just like Frank the dog, the hens are always cared for under supervision, and interactions are optional.
Why Ex-Battery Hens?
Marge, Pat and Dorothy came from a commercial farm where they had lived in cages. They arrived a little tired and scruffy, but with time, care and space, they are gradually fluffing up and regaining their energy. By giving them a second chance, our children are learning first-hand about compassion, animal welfare, and the impact we can have on the world around us.
The Benefits for Children
-
Calming and regulating – research shows hens can help children who need a brain break or some quiet time.
-
Hands-on learning – linking to science, food technology, and PSHE.
-
Wellbeing and reflection – our hens join our existing “green corner,” which already includes an allotment and a pond used as a reflection area.
Getting to Know Our Hens
-
Marge – confident and curious, always first to explore.
-
Pat – gentle and steady, happy to take things slowly.
-
Dorothy – inquisitive and adventurous, always pecking around for something new.
