PSHE at Parochial
'Parochial Cares', our mission is to prepare children for the future by living, learning and growing together in God.
To live life... life in all its fullness- (John 10:10)
Vision:
At Parochial, we aim to develop pupils’ knowledge, skills, attributes, and emotional understanding to help them lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives. Our PSHE curriculum empowers pupils to navigate an ever-changing world, build positive relationships, and thrive as confident, resilient individuals.
Through the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, we provide a comprehensive, spiral curriculum that covers the statutory requirements for Relationships Education, Health Education, and prepares pupils for life in modern Britain. We focus on developing aspiration, self-belief, and resilience, ensuring all children—particularly the most vulnerable—have the tools to stay safe, make healthy choices, and manage their mental health and wellbeing.
Our PSHE curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils, helping them understand the world around them, develop empathy, and contribute positively to society.

Educating for Dignity and Respect through PSHE
Educating for Dignity and Respect through PSHE
We explicitly teach the values of equality, fairness, mutual respect, and inclusion through our PSHE curriculum. Pupils learn about British values, the protected characteristics, and how to recognise and challenge discrimination.
Lessons support children in understanding how to treat others with kindness, care, and empathy. They learn how to navigate social situations, express their views respectfully, and resolve conflicts in a positive and constructive way.
Our curriculum empowers pupils to reflect on the importance of dignity and respect, helping them to build healthy relationships and contribute positively to the communities they belong to.

Educating for Hope and Aspiration through PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum nurtures self-belief and ambition. Pupils explore aspirations, set goals, and learn how to overcome challenges. Through guest speakers during Hope and Aspiration Weekpupils meet role models from a range of careers, helping them imagine future possibilities.
We promote growth mindset strategies, using the Learning Pit and examples of perseverance in real life and the curriculum. Pupils are inspired by courageous advocates, historical figures, and current events, encouraging them to make a positive difference in their communities and the world.

Educating for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills through PSHE
Educating for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills through PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum follows the Kapow Primary long-term plan, ensuring full coverage of the statutory guidance and the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study. It is built around six core themes:
-
Families and Relationships
-
Health and Wellbeing
-
Safety and the Changing Body
-
Citizenship
-
Economic Wellbeing
-
Identity and Transition (Year 6)
In EYFS, PSHE is embedded within the Early Years Framework, where children develop self-awareness, confidence, emotional regulation, and positive relationships through play and guided activities.
In Key Stage 1, pupils begin to learn about rules, healthy relationships, online safety, mental wellbeing, and simple concepts of economic awareness.
In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding across all themes, with explicit lessons on topics such as puberty, substance misuse, media influence, discrimination, and diversity. Our Friendship Week reinforces learning about respectful relationships, anti-bullying, and empathy.
Kapow provides clear progression, age-appropriate resources, vocabulary, and structured lesson plans, supporting teachers to deliver high-quality, consistent PSHE lessons across the school.

Educating for Community and Living Well Together through PSHE
Educating for Community and Living Well Together through PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum teaches children how to live respectfully and responsibly within a diverse society. Through discussions on equality, diversity, and inclusion, pupils learn about different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles, helping them to develop empathy and an understanding of others.
Children explore the impact of discrimination, injustice, and inequality, learning how to challenge unfairness and stand up for what is right. They develop the confidence to express their own views respectfully and to listen thoughtfully to others.
Our PSHE lessons encourage pupils to think critically about their role in the world and the impact of their choices on themselves, others, and the wider community.
Impact:
By the end of their time at Parochial, pupils will:
-
Be equipped to make safe, healthy, and informed choices about their lives.
-
Understand how to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and respect others.
-
Be able to discuss and reflect on key issues such as discrimination, equality, and global citizenship.
-
Apply their knowledge and skills across the curriculum and into the wider world, ready for the challenges of secondary school and beyond.
They will leave Parochial as confident, empathetic, and socially responsible individuals—ready to contribute positively to society and make a difference in the world around them.
