Modern Foreign Languages at Parochial
The Spanish Curriculum at Parochial
'Parochial Cares', our mission is to prepare children for the future by living, learning and growing together in God.
To live life... life in all its fullness- (John 10:10)
Vision:
At Parochial, we believe that learning a language broadens horizons and helps children grow in confidence, curiosity, and cultural understanding. Our Spanish curriculum, delivered by a specialist teacher through Junior Jam, provides engaging, high-quality language learning experiences for all pupils.
We aim to foster a love of language learning, developing skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish, while nurturing respect for other cultures and global communities.

Educating for Dignity and Respect through MFL
Educating for Dignity and Respect through MFL
Children are taught to value languages and the people who speak them. They learn to celebrate their own efforts and those of their peers, supporting each other with kindness and empathy.
By exploring different ways of living, thinking, and expressing ideas, pupils develop cultural awareness and respect for others. Our approach ensures every child feels their voice matters—whether in English, Spanish, or another language they know.

Learning Spanish helps children see beyond their immediate environment and imagine future possibilities. They learn that language connects people across the world, opening doors to travel, relationships, and career opportunities.
Through high-quality, specialist teaching, children develop ambition and a belief in their ability to communicate in a new language. They begin to see themselves as global citizens, with the confidence to navigate new and unfamiliar situations,

Our Spanish curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively from Year 1 to Year 6. Children begin with simple words, phrases, and greetings, gradually developing their understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures as they move through school.
Lessons are practical, interactive, and enjoyable, with regular opportunities to:
-
Listen to and understand spoken Spanish
-
Speak in sentences with increasing confidence
-
Read and write familiar words and phrases
-
Apply language skills in real-life contexts
Each unit revisits key concepts, helping children retain knowledge and develop secure foundations for secondary school and beyond.

Educating for Community and Living Well Together through MFL
Educating for Community and Living Well Together through MFL
Our Spanish lessons promote collaboration, mutual respect, and teamwork. Through role-play, games, and group tasks, children learn to listen carefully, take turns, and respond thoughtfully.
The curriculum introduces children to the cultures, festivals, music, and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries, helping them develop an appreciation for diversity and an understanding of the global community they are part of.
Impact:
By the end of Year 6, children at Parochial leave with a solid foundation in Spanish, ready to build upon this learning at secondary school. They can understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish, use key vocabulary with increasing accuracy, and speak with growing confidence.
Our Spanish curriculum develops listening skills, memory, curiosity and empathy. More than that, it supports pupils to become respectful, articulate and outward-looking individuals—ready to embrace the richness of other languages and cultures with joy and enthusiasm.
They leave Parochial with a strong foundation in Spanish, an appreciation of different cultures, and the confidence to use language to communicate with others beyond their own community.
