English
This term in English, we will be reading Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg.
We will, write a series of diaries about significant events in Annie Edson Taylor’s life. We will focus on, identifying the audience for and purpose of writing, organising paragraphs around a theme with a focus on more complex narrative structures, using commas after fronted adverbials and using commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity in writing.

Place Value
We will learning to read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit , count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1 000 000, interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero, round any number up to 1 000 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000, solve number problems and practical problems that involve all of the above and read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals.
Addition and subtraction
We will, add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction), add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers, use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy, solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.

In Science this term, we will be learning about Materials and their Properties
We will, compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets, know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution.

In History this term we will be learning all about the Groovy Greeks.
In this topic we will understand how democracy developed in Ancient Greece, children will explain what life was like in Ancient Athens, children will explain what happened during the battle of Marathon, children will know and understand how religion affected everyday life in Ancient Greece, learn about sport and drama in Ancient Greece and understand and explain how the Romans conquered Greece.

Art
Art
This term in Art, we will learning about Painting and Mixed Media Portraits.
This unit offers children opportunities to develop skills in creating interesting portrait drawings using words, experimenting with materials and techniques, and constructing self-portraits that represent aspects of themselves. This unit enhances their understanding and application of art vocabulary and encourages thoughtful decisions in their artwork composition.

RE
In RE this term, we will be learning about What does it mean if Christians believe God is Holy and Loving.
Within this unit, pupils will learn about what Christians believe God is like, exploring key texts from the Bible, using ways of knowing that theologians use. They will study passages from the book of Isaiah and Psalm 103 (Old Testament) and the book of 1 John (New Testament) to work out some ways the Bible says that God is both holy and loving. Pupils will learn how to use key vocabulary such as ‘omnipotent, omniscient and eternal’ to describe the Christian view of God. Pupils will link their learning in this topic to other concepts studied to suggest why Christians believe that God is forgiving and loving, showing the impact that sin can have on the lives of believers. Pupils will be able to explain that for most Christians, getting to know God is like getting to know a person.

Computing
This term in ICT, we will be learning about Online Safety.
Children will gain a greater understanding of the impact that sharing digital content can have, know how to maintain secure passwords, learn about how to reference sources in their work and know how to ensure reliability through using different methods of communication.

Spanish
This half term in Spanish, children will be learning how to talk about future plans. They’ll explore vocabulary linked to jobs and aspirations, practising how to say what they want to be when they’re older and why. They’ll use sentence starters, connectives, and opinion phrases to build more detailed sentences, and revisit key grammar such as gender, word order, and adjective agreement. Through games, speaking tasks, and writing challenges, children will grow in confidence expressing themselves in Spanish — all while thinking about their hopes and dreams for the future.

PE
PE
In athletics this half term, Year 5 will focus on building strength, speed and control. They’ll develop their skills in longer-distance running, take part in relay races, and use run-ups in throwing events like javelin. They’ll also explore how to set targets and reflect on their performances to improve.

PSHE
PSHE
This term in PSHE we will be learning about Families and Relationships
We will be describing what qualities a good friend should have and recognise which of these they have and which they could develop. Children will recognise that friendships have ups and downs and this is normal. They will understand what marriage is and know that it is a choice people make. The children will understand that we all have a range of attributes that make us who we are and we should be proud of these. Year 5 will know that sometimes families can make children feel unhappy or unsafe. They will understand why someone might bully others, that attitudes and laws around gender equality have changed over time and they will understand that stereotypes exist and these can lead to discrimination.

Music
Music
This term in Year 5, children will explore more complex musical skills including rhythm notation, harmony, and ensemble performance. They’ll sing and perform confidently using body percussion, tuned and untuned instruments, and begin to improvise within a structure. Pupils will learn how to layer rhythms, keep in time with others, and follow musical cues. They’ll listen carefully to a range of musical styles and learn how to describe music using technical vocabulary. Through singing, movement, and creative music-making, they’ll build confidence as performers and composers.
