This half term in English, children will begin by exploring poetry through the theme of family. Inspired by Michael Rosen’s humorous and expressive free verse, they’ll write their own poems based on family sayings and shared moments, contributing to a class ‘Family Album’ of poetry. Later in the term, they will delve into the world of Gorilla by Anthony Browne. Through this beautifully illustrated and emotionally rich story, children will explore themes of loneliness, imagination, and connection. They’ll build descriptive language and narrative skills as they work towards writing their own fantasy story where a surprising visitor takes a child on an unforgettable adventure.

History
History
This half term in history, children will be learning all about the Rotten Romans! They’ll explore how the Romans invaded Britain, what changes they brought with them, and how those changes shaped the country we live in today. From Roman roads and stone buildings to sanitation, government, and even the calendar, children will investigate how the Roman legacy is still visible. Through activities like comparing historical periods, researching political systems, and exploring Roman inventions, they’ll build an understanding of how the Romans modernised Britain—and why their empire eventually fell apart.
-
Art
Art
This half term in art, children will be exploring how artists use light and dark to bring their work to life. They'll begin by learning how to mix tints and shades to create depth, before experimenting with different painting techniques using a range of tools and materials. They’ll look at the work of American artist Audrey Flack, a pioneer of photorealism, and explore how she used everyday objects, colour, and light to create dramatic still life compositions. Inspired by her work, children will plan their own still life arrangements and apply their painting skills to create a final piece, using light and shade to make their artwork appear three-dimensional.

What kind of world did Jesus want?
This half term, children are exploring the concept of the ‘Gospel’ and what Jesus’ teachings tell Christians about how to live. They’ll begin by learning about the first disciples and what it meant to be ‘fishers of people’. Through Bible stories and parables—such as the healing of the leper and the Good Samaritan—they’ll reflect on how Jesus showed love, care and compassion to others, especially those who were often ignored. Children will consider how Christians today try to follow Jesus’ example and what kind of world he wanted to create—one based on kindness, love and helping others. -
Computing
Computing
In computing, we are learning how to stay safe and responsible online. We will understand how to protect our identity, avoid scams like phishing, and recognise that what we share creates a lasting digital footprint. We will also learn the risks of downloading apps, including malware and viruses. We will explore how to balance screen time with active, healthy lifestyles and make smart choices about technology use.
-

They’ll learn about personal boundaries—both physical and emotional—and how to communicate their own needs clearly and kindly. Through role play and discussion, children will think about how their actions can affect others and how small acts of kindness can have a big impact. They’ll also explore the impact of bullying and the responsibility we all have to help stop it, especially as bystanders. Towards the end of the half term, they’ll look at how gender stereotypes can be reinforced in stories and media, and why it’s important to challenge assumptions about what boys and girls can or should do.
-
Music
Music
Year 4 pupils will continue developing their musical skills through singing in parts, performing rhythmic patterns, and using notation to play and compose simple melodies. They’ll learn to follow a conductor, change dynamics, and sing with confidence and control. Children will explore different instrumental families (like strings, brass and percussion), and use body percussion and instruments to create layered compositions. Using listening and appraising skills, they’ll identify instruments, tempo and texture in well-known pieces, and discuss how composers use music to create atmosphere or tell a story.
