How does Parochial CE Primary School know if children need extra help?”


-concerns are raised by parents/carers, teachers or the pupil

 “How will I know how Parochial is supporting my child?”


  •  Quality First Teaching (Wave 1 and 2)

Every child at Parochial receives quality first teaching. This means that a wide range of teaching and learning styles are used and that appropriate learning objectives are set for all children with a curriculum matched to their needs. If a child is not making expected progress then intervention in a small group is delivered by a teacher or a teaching assistant.  Consistent, positive behaviour strategy is applied, based on the school rules and the Christian values of our school.

A child may be identified by the class teacher as needing some extra support in more specific areas for example, reading, phonics or numeracy.  This specific one-to-one or group work may be run by the teacher or a teaching assistant who has had relevant training. The effectiveness of the intervention programmes are reviewed half-termly at Pupil Progress Meetings by the Senior Leadership Team, SENCo and class teacher.  

In addition to Wave 1, in-class additional targeted teaching support is delivered if a there are on-going concerns about the progress.  Pre-teaching of the vocabulary and concepts is applied, opportunities for over-learning, booster classes, consultations with the SENDCo and parents/carers.


  •  SEN support (Wave 3)

When a pupil is identified by a member of staff as needing specific and specialist support from an outside agency, a referral will be made, with parental consent, and forwarded to the appropriate agency.  After a series of assessments, a programme of support is provided to the school and parents/carers.  This support is regularly reviewed and new desired objectives are set.


  •  Specific Individual Support in the form of an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) (previously known as a Statement of Educational needs)

If your child’s needs are complex or severe, the school (or parent/carer) may request that the Local Authority carry out a statutory assessment of your child’s needs. The school has a duty to meet the requirements of the plan and may request additional funding from the Local Authority.


Annual review meetings to discuss, update or amend the Education Health Care Plans are held with the parents/carers, the Local authority staff, outside agencies, school staff and a pupil.  These are organised by the SENCo.


“What do the staff at Parochial specialise in?”


We have a highly qualified staff that can teach and support pupils with specific and general learning difficulties, speech and language difficulties, pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties, motor difficulties, and visual or hearing impairment.

Our staff  are trained in Team teach - behavioural techniques and strategies.  We support children who might need to improve their social communication skills, speaking and listening skills, and those pupils for whom English is an additional language.


“What support can the school access from outside agencies?”

 “What support is there for my child’s overall health and well-being?” 


If a child has a medical need then an Individual Medical Care Plan will be written in consultation with parents/carers, the school nurse and the relevant health care professionals. The Individual Medical Care Plan will be reviewed, at least, annually in September, or whenever appropriate, to meet the needs of the child. All staff are made aware of the plan and the procedures they need to follow.


Where necessary, and in agreement with parents/carers, medicines can be administered in school.  These are regular medicines, usually self-administered under supervision of a member of staff.  A signed consent form is in place. See 'Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions Policy'.


Members of staff such as the class teacher, teaching assistant and the pastoral assistant are readily available to children, who wish to discuss emotional and mental health issues and concerns.


Weekly activities such as friendships groups, circle time and team building sessions are provided to meet the social and emotional needs of identified pupils


Children who find lunchtime a challenge are supported by the team of trained lunchtime assistants and teaching assistants.


Many of our teachers and teaching assistants are trained in First Aid.  There are always two members of staff on First Aid duty.


“How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?”


Activities and school trips are available to all children.

Detailed risk assessments are carried out by class teachers and preliminary visits are made.  Procedures are put in place to enable all children to participate.


“How accessible is the school environment?”


All doors into the school are accessible by wheelchair and all doors are wide opening.

The school has accessible toilets for staff and visitors.

“How will Parochial support my child when joining the school or transferring to a new class or to High school?”


A meeting and visit to school is arranged in July for new parents/carers and children before they join our Reception and Nursery classes.


A home visit is arranged for parents/carers and children before they join our Nursery class.


One to one meetings between parents/carers and the teacher are arranged to discuss needs. Where a child has more specialised needs an extra meeting is arranged between parents/carers, SENCo and other relevant professionals.  An individual transition arrangements are made to meet the needs of a new pupil.


Mrs Wright, Head teacher, Miss Thompson, Deputy Head teacher and Mrs Evans, SENDCo welcome parents/carers to visit our school prior to their child joining.


All children spend a transition morning in their new classroom in July where they meet their new teacher and teaching assistant. Additional sessions are arranged according to the individual pupils' needs.


Parents/carers, high school staff and outside agencies are invited to the transition meetings at Parochial to liaise with our staff prior to the year 6 pupils’ transition days.  Where additional visits would benefit the pupil to their new High School, these are arranged.  All details regarding the provision and needs, including the reports, professionals' recommendations, attainment levels and specific curriculum/support arrangements are passed on to the relevant member of staff.


“How are the school’s resources allocated and matched to children’s educational needs?”


The SEND budget is allocated each financial year. The money is used to provide additional support or resources dependent on an individual pupil’s need.


Additional provision may be allocated after discussion with the class teacher at pupil progress meetings/SEND review meetings or if a concern has been raised at any time throughout the year.


“What additional activities are available for my child?’’


Parochial offers a range of lunch time and after school clubs.  These are free of charge and available to children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.  Details of the clubs are available termly in our school newsletter and on the website.  All pupils are encouraged to join in.  Arrangements are made to ensure all pupils' safety and well-being.


All Reception children are paired up with a buddy from Year 6. These special friends support their younger peers throughout their first year at Parochial.


Junior Play Leaders from KS2 organise and provide play opportunities for KS1 children during the lunch break.


“How will I be involved in discussions about and planning for my child’s education?”


All parents are encouraged to contribute to their child’s education through discussions with the class teacher, through the use of the homework planner, half termly reports, a range of workshops, newsletters, texts, school website and attending open days.


Parent meetings with the class teacher are held twice per year, in addition to the review meetings for the parents/carers of children whose child is receiving SEND support.  These are held termly, or as often as needed (Plan - Do - Assess - Review Cycle).  They provide opportunities to review child’s progress and discuss new targets and strategies.  Parents/carers, class teacher, SENDCo and most importantly, pupils attend these review meetings.


The School Council, House Captains, Eco Council, Sports Ambassadors, Friendship Ambassadors and Ethos Group provide opportunities for all our pupils to have their say and receive all necessary support.
